Purpose: Chronic heart failure (CHF) was characterizedby failure of enough blood supply from heart to meet thebody’s metabolic demands, and the prevalence of CHF continuouslyincreases globally. The personalized diagnosis ofChinese Medicine (CM) may help to stratify the CHF. CM classifiesCHF into several different syndrome types, and integratingWestern and Chinese medicine to treat CHF has proved a validatedtherapeutic approach. Metabolomics is regarded as apotential platform to provide biomarkers for disease-subtypesin recent years. In this research, we designed an explorativestudy of 38 patients, combining NMR plasma metabolomicswith CM diagnosis in order to identify diagnostic biomarkersfor two CHF syndrome subtypes.Methods: After processing theNMRdata, orthogonal partialleast square discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) was performed.Results: The plasma metabolic patterns of group 1 ‘Yindeficiency VS non-Yin deficiency’ and 2 ‘Yang deficiency VSnon-Yang deficiency’ were clearly discriminated, respectively.And potential biomarkers of CHF based on the two CM syndrometypes indicated the alterative modes of metabolites andmetabolic pathways in the disease, e.g. the disturbance in fattyacids, amino acids and glucose, etc.Conclusion: This study proved that combiningmetabolomics with CM diagnosis can reveal metabolicsignatures for CHF syndrome subtypes. The identified plasmametabolites may be of special clinical relevance for subtypesof CHF, which could lead to further understandingof mechanisms involved and an improvement in personalizedinterventions for CHF.This work was supported by TheNational Science Foundation of China(no.81302914).
