Effects of maternal obesity and hypoxic-ischemic brain injury on behavioural outcomes in offspring Children from obese mothers are at higher risk of neurodevel- opmental deficits, including lower IQ scores, cognitive deficits, and delayed physical and neurodevelopmental milestones. Neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) causes delayed brain development and cog- nitive dysfunction. While both maternal obesity and HI can induce behavioural changes, the effect of combining both insults has not been examined previously.
