Occurrence of antibodies anti- Neospora spp. in cart horses and Crioula breed horses from Rio Grande do Sul state

The protozoa of the genus Neospora spp.(Apicomplexa, Sarcocystidae) are capable ofinfecting equines causing different clinicalmanifestations. However, the pathogenesis ofthese protozoa in horses has not been fullyexplained yet. Two species of the genusNeospora spp. have already been describedparasitizing equines - Neospora caninum andNeospora hughesi. The infection by N. caninumis mainly characterized by reproductive problemsand neonatal illness, and N. hughesi is associatedwith myeloencephalitis (Dubey and Porterfield,1990; Lindsay, 2001).
