Aims: In cancer tissue, mitochondrial respiration is reduced, mitochondrial cristae are smaller and there are fewer mitochondria per cell.Conversely, markers of glycolysis are increased. These observations suggest a shift in glucose metabolism away from oxidative phosphorylation. The aim of this study was to assess the extent of the glycolytic switch inhuman primary colorectal carcinoma and liver metastatic tissue bymeasuring the activity of the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylationenzyme cytochrome-c oxidase.
