The method involves detecting whether geometric offset exists between fracture surfaces at fracture points (10, 12) of a fractured component i.e. cracked piston rod (2). The geometric offset of the fracture surfaces is optically measured along a direction of a surface normal to the fracture points and both sides of the fracture points. A digital camera is attached at the fracture points. Edges of the surfaces are digitally photographed, and characteristics of the edges are determined from a photograph. An independent claim is also included for a testing device for testing a fractured component.
