Essential oils are secondary metabolites whose biological properties have been studied with emphasis on antimicrobial activity. style="font-family:Verdana;">Hyptis carpinifolia style="font-family:Verdana;"> Benth (Rosmaninho) is used in folk medicine in the fight against colds and rheumatism. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil from style="font-family:Verdana;"> H. carpinifolia style="font-family:Verdana;">. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation using a modified Clevenger apparatus. The biological activity was determined using the Agar Cavity Diffusion technique to evaluate the effect of concentrations of 500, 250, 125, 62.5, 31.25, 15.62, 7.81 and 3.9 μg·mL style="font-family:Verdana;">-1 style="font-family:Verdana;"> on the bacteria style="font-family:Verdana;">Escherichia coli style="font-family:Verdana;">, style="font-family:Verdana;">Listeria monocytogenes style="font-family:Verdana;">, style="font-family:Verdana;">Salmonella style="font-family:Verdana;"> Choleraesuis, style="font-family:Verdana;">Staphylococcus aureus style="font-family:Verdana;"> and style="font-family:Verdana;">Pseudomonas aeruginosa style="font-family:Verdana;">. The fungicidal potential was evaluated by the method of dilution in agar, and the percentage inhibition of mycelial growth of style="font-family:Verdana;">Alternaria alternata style="font-family:Verdana;">, style="font-family:Verdana;">Botrytis cinerea style="font-family:Verdana;"> and style="font-family:Verdana;">Fusarium oxysporum style="font-family:Verdana;"> was evaluated. The dilutions tested were 1000, 750, 500, 250 and 100 μL·L style="font-family:Verdana;">-1 style="font-family:Verdana;">. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the essential oil for style="font-family:Verdana;">L. monocytogenes style="font-family:Verdana;">, style="font-family:Verdana;">S. aureus style="font-family:Verdana;"> and style="font-family:Verdana;">E. coli style="font-family:Verdana;"> were 31.25; 15.62 and 62.5 μg·mL style="font-family:Verdana;">-1 style="font-family:Verdana;">, respectively. The MIC was 500 μg·mL style="font-family:Verdana;">-1 style="font-family:Verdana;"> for style="font-family:Verdana;">Salmonella style="font-family:Verdana;">Choleraesuis and style="font-family:Verdana;">P. aeruginosa style="font-family:Verdana;">. The percentage inhibition style="font-family:Verdana;">s style="font-family:""> style="font-family:Verdana;"> of mycelial growth of style="font-family:Verdana;">B. cinerea style="font-family:Verdana;"> and style="font-family:Verdana;">A. alternate style="font-family:Verdana;"> were 67% and 33%, respectively, at the dilution of 750 μL·L style="font-family:Verdana;">-1 style="font-family:Verdana;">. The essential oil inhibited about 48% of the mycelial growth of style="font-family:Verdana;">F. oxysporum style="font-family:Verdana;">, at the dilution of 1000 μL·L style="font-family:Verdana;">-1 style="font-family:Verdana;">.
