Phylogeny of Princeps butterflies from China: evidences from mitochondrial partial COⅠand COⅡ gene sequences (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae

In order to study phylogenetic relationships among Princeps species of China, partial COⅠ (about 627 bp) and COⅡgene sequence (about 690 bp) from 10 species of Princeps in China were analyzed. There were 184 variable sites and 144 parsimony-informative sites in the 1 317 nucleotides of the data, Princeps exhibited a 74.2% Arginine and Thymine bias. Molecular phylogenetic trees were reconstructed using maximum parsimony (MP) method and maximum likelihood (ML) method. The molecular phylogenetic trees showed that P.demoleus , P.paris perhaps was the basal to other Princeps species from China. For P.bianor, P.polyctor, P.dialis and P.doddsi, results suggested that relationships among them were closer. The relationships among P.arcturus, P.Krishna, P.maackii and P.syfanius were also closer. There was no sequence divergence between COⅠ and COII gene sequences of P. dialis and P. doddsi, and the sequence divergence between P.bianor and P.polyctor was 0.15%. The results indicated that P.doddsi should be treated as synonym of P.dialis, and P.polyctor should be treated as synonym of P.bianor
