Adenocarcinoma of the Ileocolic Junction and Multifocal Hepatic Sarcomas in an Aged Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta)

Anagedmalerhesusmacaqueinourcolonyhaddecreasedappetiteandalossofinterestinbehavioraltesting.CBCanalysisrevealedaregenerative,microcytic,hypochromicanemiawiththrombocytosis,consistentwithirondeficiency.Afecaloccultbloodtestwaspositive.Ultrasoundimagingrevealednumerous,vascularizedfocalliverlesionsthatsuggestedmetastases.Themacaque'sappetitecontinuedtodecrease,andhebecamemorelethargic.Atthispoint,theinvestigatorelectedtoeuthanizethemacaque.Atnecropsy,theileocolicjunctionwaswhiteandabnormallythickened,andtheliverwaspaletanwithapproximately18discretewhitemassesrandomlyscatteredthroughoutthehepaticparenchyma.Histologically,themassattheileocolicjunctionwasidentifiedasanintestinaladenocarcinoma,whereasthelivermasseswereconfirmedtobeundifferentiatedhepaticsarcomas.Thiscasereportdescribesarhesusmacaquethathad2unrelatedprimaryneoplasms.Areviewoftheliteratureindicatesthatthisrhesusmacaqueisthefirstreportedtohaveanadenocarcinomaoftheileocolicjunctionandmultiplehepaticsarcomassimultaneously.
