Animalmodelsplayacriticalroleinourunderstandingofthecauseofhumandiseasesandprovideanopportunitytoevaluatenewtherapeutictreatments.Theusefulnessofananimalmodelisdependent,inpart,onhowcloselyitresemblesneurochemical,neuropathologic,andbehavioralfeaturesofthehumancondition.Otherconsiderationsthatmayenhancethevalueofamodelincludeexpense,availability,reproducibility,animalmorbidityandmortality,andinvestigatorexperience.Parkinson'sdisease(PD)isaprogressiveneurodegenerativedisordercharacterizedbyslowmovements,tremor,andwalkingimpairmentduetolossofmidbrainnigrostriatalneuronsanddepletionofstriataldopamine.InthePDresearchfield,anumberofneurotoxic,pharmacologic,andtransgenicanimalmodelsareavailableforresearchstudies.Wewillfocusontheadvantagesanddisadvantagesofthe1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine(MPTP)-lesionedmouseandnonhumanprimatemodelsofPD.OurgoalistoguideresearchersintheappropriatenessoftheMPTPmodelsintheirstudiesbybalancingunderstandingofthemodels,objectivesofthestudy,andhealthandsafetyoftheanimals.Inaddition,thetechnicaluseandsafehandlingofMPTParediscussed.
