Refinement of Canine Pancreatitis Model: Inducing Pancreatitis by Using Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography

Thecausesandtreatmentsofpancreatitishavebeenstudiedindiversespecies,butthecaninepancreatitismodelhasbeenusedmostoftenduetoitssimilaritiestotheconditioninhumans.Althoughpancreatitisindogscanbeinducedreadilybynumerousmethods,managingthesedogscanbedifficultbecausetheyoftendevelopsevereabdominalpain,vomiting,inappetance,andlethargy.Inanefforttostudypancreatitis,weperformedapilotstudytodeterminewhetheranendoscopicpancreaticprocedurewouldbepossibleinadogandwhether,throughvariousmanipulations,anewmethodofinducingpancreatitiscouldbedeveloped.Themodelusesendoscopicretrogradecholangiopancreatography(ERCP),acommonprocedureinhumangastroenterologythathasbeenassociatedwithpostproceduralpancreatitis.Althoughall8dogsusedindevelopingtheERCPmodelhadbothbiochemicalandhistologicchangesconsistentwithpancreatitis,7ofthe8dogsremainedfreeofclassicclinicalsignsofthedisease.Thismethodispresentedasarefinementofacaninemodelandpresentsanalternativemethodofinducingpancreatitis,withdecreasedriskofdevelopingassociatedclinicalsigns.
