Oralpapillomasintwomalerhesusmacaquesthatwerediagnosedmorphologicallyasfiliformandsquamoustypesaredescribed.Twoadditionalmacaqueshadoralpapilliformlesionsconsistenthistologicallywithpapillaryhyperplasia.Immunohistochemistry,alongwithelectronmicroscopyandPCRassays,failedtodemonstrateevidenceofpapillomavirusinanyofthetumors;however,suchresultsareoftenlackingwhensuspectorallesionsinhumansandotherspeciesareassessed.Otherpotentialcausesofthepapillarymassesincludechronicirritationandperhapsageneticsusceptibility.Benigntumorsoftheoralepitheliuminmacaqueshavenotbeenreportedpreviously;theyappeartoberareandofvariableclinicalsignificance.
