Copyright © 2017 by the Congress of Neurological SurgeonsDisruptive innovation is a term that was coined by Dr Clayton Christensen, professor of business at Harvard Business School.1 In this, he describes the process by which a product emerges into an existing market, typically from outside established market leaders, and then relentlessly displaces established competitors. Key components of a disruptive technology include performance characteristics that initially are undervalued due to a failure to meet current demands, but possessing rapid improvement rates which rapidly outpace iterative advances by established technologies. Examples include the personal computer as a disruptor to main frame, cellular phones to fixed-line telephones, community colleges to 4-yr college, and, more recently, retail medical clinics were disruptors to traditional doctor's offices (Figure 1).
