Providing material for foreign patients in their own language creates a problem for hospital librarians when they must deal with books in languages which they themselves do not know. In a multi-cultural society and a world fast becoming smaller, this problem grows, and it was for this purpose that the book was compiled. The history of this publication began with the Conference of the International Federation of Library Associations at Helsinki in 1965. The Hospital Libraries Section of the Federation selected qualified members to compile a list of 100 books for each of twenty-one countries. The books cover the whole range of available literature of the country and are annotated in English.
