摘要

Dr. William Osler in 1901 at the dedication of the Boston Medical Library gave a most inspiring address entitled Books and Men. In this address appear some of Osler's often quoted remarks: "It is hard for me to speak of the value of libraries in terms which would not seem exaggerated.... Tostudy the phenomena of disease without books is to sail an uncharted sea, while to study books without patients is not to go to sea at all" (1). The value of a constructive reading program was emphasized many centuries earlier by the wise Confucius. A modern scholar has remarked: "Confucius ... emphasized again and again the importance of being widely read and learned in all aspects of life without forgetting the importance of having a philosophic principle that runs through all these details of scholarship" (2). Confucius himself said: "In every hamlet of ten families there are always some people as honest and faithful as myself, but none who is so devoted to study" (3).
