History of the Library of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Università degli Studi in Florence

IT might be said that the present-day Library of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Universit'a degli Studi in Florence was founded at the same time as the Hospital of S. Maria Nuova in 1287, when Folco Portinari exchanged one of his plots of land for one belonging to the monks of St. Egidio. This exchange, guaranteed by a brief of Onorio IV dated March 20, 1287, opened the way to the construction of the Hospital, which was finished on June 23, 1288, the very day on which the Foundation Act was drawn up (1).
