ONLY 37 PERCENT CERTIFIED

During 1965/ 66, the Membership Committee reported that 174 active members and 22 associate members had been recruited. During the same period, only 26 applicants were approved for Grade I certification and 4 applicants for Grade II. Of the 30 applicants certified, 17 were new members. It appears to me that a greater percentage of new members ought to apply for certification. In fact, a greater percentage of the total membership of the Medical Library Association ought to apply for certification. Of the approximately 1,750 individual members (not including institutional members) of MLA, only 637, or 37 percent, have been certified at any grade. Why have a certification program if it cannot gain greater support from the membership at large? It is shocking to find that former officers of the Association and numerous committee members have never taken time to become certified. You are now being extended a special invitation to write for an application. The program needs your support. Your support will strengthen the image of the medical library profession.
