Few places could be more conduciveto malaria transmission than the Chikwawadistrict of southern Malawi, aflood-prone wedge of lushly forestedlowlands located in the country’s LowerShire Valley. In addition, the climate istropical and the people are plentiful(about 500 000).The result: year-round transmissionof one of the continent’s leading killers.In 2005, the government of Malawi,with support from the US President’sMalaria Initiative and the Global Fundto Fight HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria,stepped up the distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets free of chargethrough health facilities around thecountry, starting with highly endemicareas like Chikwawa.
