Few readers will be familiar with the name Knox beyond its association with a class of postwar frigates. Commodore DW Knox served in the US Navy during the Spanish-American and First World Wars. He commanded a variety of warships and served in flag headquarters before becoming a prominent naval historian, overseeing the US Navy Department's historical office. In the latter role he was instrumental in assisting President Franklin D Roosevelt to educate the American public in the role of naval power and the relationship between war and peace. Knox was both a historian and a public influencer.
