India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, was convinced that India's economic and social future depended on scientific and technological development. Nehru deeply believed that "scientific temper" would transform India, and he was determined to make India self-reliant in science and technology. Nehru also believed that India's history, heritage, size, geography, and current and future power capabilities meant that its policy choices would make an important impact in Asia and the world.
