Petro Oleksiyovych Poroshenko was sworn in as President of Ukraine on June 7, 2014, as an independent. He was born on September 26, 1965, in Bolhrad, an historical region of south-west Ukraine. He grew up in Bendery, now part of Moldova, where his father, Olexij, worked as an agricultural engineer. Mr Poroshenko, practiced judo and sambo during his youth, and he became a candidate for Master of Sport for the USSR, which was a national champion recognition. Upon high school graduation, he was not given the gold medal which was customarily given to most students. He was sent to army service in Kazakhstan after getting into a fight with four cadets at the military commissariat. He graduated with a degree in Economics in 1989 from the Institute of International Relations at Kiev State University. He founded, while he was still a student, a legal advisory firm to mediate contract negotiations of foreign traders. He worked as an assistant at Kiev State University's International Relations Department from 1989 to 1992.
