Cooperative efforts come to fruition

Air defence systems have been the focus of heavy investment recent years. Two projects have dominated the sector - the US-led F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) project and Europe's next generation of the Typhoon, the Eurofighter. The JSF project aims to produce an aircraft capable of supersonic speeds combined with the latest in stealth technology, used so effectively in the development of the US high-tech, long-range bomber. The contract to build the JSF, awarded to Lockheed Martin, is the largest in the history of the US Military and is worth almost $5bn.
