If there's one thing that diplomatic historians like more than going to an archive, it's an archive that comes to them. This is precisely the service provided by the FCO's three series of edited collections relating to the exercise of British diplomacy between (so far) 1898-1982. Series Ⅰ (1898-1914) examined the origins of the First World War; series Ⅱ (1919-1939) the volatile interwar period and series Ⅲ covers a variety of post-war themes and issues from the Potsdam conference to German re-armament, the Korean War and various aspects of Cold War strategy. This, the latest volume of Series Ⅲ focuses specifically upon Anglo-Soviet relations 1979-82, that period denned initially by the invasion of Afghanistan and subsequently by the imposition of martial law in Poland.
