Julian Richards'book takes as its subject national security strategy in the contemporary world, with the 2010 United Kingdom National Security Strategy (NSS) and Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) as its point of reference. As the first major defense strategy review since 1998, he argues that these documents provide a window on "threat, strategy and policy in twenty-first century Britain"(p. 4) and indeed the wider world. He also analyzes the attempt to move beyond the "sofa government" of the Blair years through the creation of a National Security Council in the Cabinet Office, emphasizing the importance of professional processes of strategic analysis.
