The term biometric security encompasses a variety of different methods for identifying individual human beings, based on their unique physical characteristics or behavioural traits. It is already used extensively for controlling access to information and restricted places but its potential is far wider, extending to identifying people during surveillance operations, for example. There are two main types of biometric identifier: physical and behavioural. Physical systems include characteristics such as fingerprints and iris and facial recognition. Behavioural systems include an individual's gait or typing rhythm.
