Ever since their introduction a century ago, conventional submarines proved to be highly effective weapon systems that often were, and still are, the platform of choice for the militarily weaker conflict party. In modern terms submarines might be categorised as a naval form of asymmetric threat. With their potential for sea denial, especially in the littorals and choke points, they can, with relatively low effort, serve to inhibit the naval operations of even heavily superior forces. The proliferation of small conventional submarines with ever increasing air independent propulsion (AIP) capabilities provides a formidable, hard-to-detect force multiplier to such countries that would otherwise be unable to stage potent naval forces. In the case of turning 'rogue state', they can emerge as adversaries to be seriously reckoned with by allied and coalition navies.
