Since the manufacture and use of anti-personnel mines was banned under the Ottawa Convention in 1997, 156 states have adopted the treaty, and programmes organised to locate and destroy minefields across the globe. Despite the fact that attention is now very firmly focused on the dangers being posed by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), the work of mine clearance carries on.
