Protecting the armed forces from injury in Afghanistan and other conflict zones has been a major focus for body armour and protected vehicle designers worldwide. The fleet of protected vehicles deployed to date have been manufactured from steel, or aluminium combined with composite spall armour of various types. It is surprising that it has taken so long to recognise the benefits of composite in the manufacture of protected vehicle structures, given that metal was eradicated from use in personal protection 30 years ago.
