The construction of the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers is an engineering project of magnitude and ambition. Work has been ongoing since the contracts were signed in July 2008, and - while there is a considerable time to go before the carriers will be ready for deployment in 2016 - several milestones have already been reached with completed hull sections of the first vessel, HMS Queen Elizabeth, being assembled at Govan and Portsmouth and four other locations across the country.
