Redefining mine protection

The effect of mines/IEDs in terms of external damage to armoured vehicles is obvious, but not everyone understands the mechanisms by which mine blast forces can injure the occupants. Even if the vehicle's belly plate is not penetrated, the occupants can be killed or severely injured by the floor being deformed upwards into the cabin space at high velocity. Similarly, the rapid upward acceleration of the whole vehicle (global acceleration) can result in severe internal injuries.
