Simulation systems are now being employed across defence for training purposes as diverse as parachute descent and the safe use of construction equipment, as DM} 55 highlighted.1 Among NATO members, the MoD is establishing a Common Simulation Framework programme through DE&S and the International Defence Training Land Warfare Centre. In the Department of Defense, the US Army Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training & Instrumentation (PEO STRI) in Orlando, Florida, has been responsible for rolling out over 800 Engagement Skills Trainer Systems across the US Army, providing individual and crew-served weapons training up to squad level. Through NATO itself, the Centre for Analysis and Simulation for the Preparation of Air Operations (CASPOA) in Lyon, France, received official accreditation as a Centre for Excellence in 2008.
