In the literal sense, the word Intifada means, uprising. Claiming a place for itself in the political lexicon in the late 1980s, Intifada has been used synonymously for the mass agitation by Palestinians in the Israeli occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza strip starting in 1987. The Palestinian resistance against the Israeli occupation has seen two spontaneous popular upswings. The first Intifada was initiated in 1987, over what could be termed a relatively minor issue, involving the killing of four Palestinian refugees from the Jabalia refugee camp at the Erez crossing.
