Promoting Effective Decision Making Using Analytics in a Virtual Technology Lab

There is no doubt that competing on analytics and evidence-based management are key inter-related domains relevant to business education (Davenport, 2006; Pfeffer & Sutton, 2006). These domains transcend many of what is often referred to as "functional business silos" to focus on a critical general aspect: decision making. Today, organizations are trying to use advanced analytics (quantitative or statistical models) and evidence (data, information, and knowledge) to investigate a variety of business problems, issues, and opportunities, including customer management, supply chain management, and financial performance (Davenport, 2006). This teaching brief describes how to utilize a virtual technology lab that is managed through a joint industry/university collaboration and partnership.
