Good start to the year for French exporters

French skimmed milk powder (SMP) exports were up 16.5% in the first three months of this year. Foreign sales reached over 53 000 tonnes, confirming it as one of the world's leading SMP suppliers. France had the strongest rebound in sales last year, after leaders, the United States, and is on course this year to overtake Germany as Europe's biggest supplier (see table opposite). Around a fifth of sales went to neighbouring Belgium in the first quarter, mostly for further export. Its other leading SMP customers are Algeria and Italy. Sales to both were up in the quarter.
