Dairy sector future bright, says EU chief

The EU dairy sector should continue to expand production throughout 2011 on the back of positive price trends in 2010, the European Commission told member states this week. Farm Commissioner Dacian Ciolos, presenting the latest quarterly dairy report, said 2010 had been a positive year for the sector, following in the footsteps of the 2009 dairy crisis. Commission sources explained that while the EU as a whole continues to undershoot quotas, some seven member states are now on course to incur superlevy fines for over-production this quota year: the Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus and Luxembourg.
