The Russian dairy industry is dynamic and changing, as consumers there demand both the health-conscious choices of their European neighbours and the products they know and love. It is also evolving to face a future not unlike its counterparts in western Europe. Milk quality issues are diminishing for producers, and some companies are not only looking to the large Russian domestic market, but externally to the EU and other nearby countries. While it remains polarised, with large western and Russian companies on the one hand, and smaller regional companies on the other, it is also very dynamic. "The Russian market has become very competitive, with the fastest growing segments being yogurts and dairy desserts," says Marina Kagan, head of corporate communications and investor relations, Wimm-Bill-Dann (WBD).
