Farming and food are a fundamental part of the UK economy, worth more than £100 billion (€129.7bn) a year and supporting one in eight jobs, according to the UK government. Over the last few years, volatility in the prices paid to farmers for their produce has caused significant difficulty to the industry. During the summer and autumn of 2015, some farmers took direct action in protest over falling dairy and meat prices.
