It is believed that smart artificial systems, the development of which is currently researched very extensively by knowledge engineering research teams around the world, have enormous potential to transfer our society to knowledge-based philosophy as required in the age of a new millennium and a global economy. A number of international conferences contribute each year in a substantial way to the above-mentioned development. This Guest Issue is based on some cutting-edge contributions provided by two very dynamic and innovative conferences in this area that were held in late 2011: the International Conference on Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Information & Engineering Systems (KES'2011, Kaiserslautern, Germany) and the International Conference on Computational Collective Intelligence-Technologies and Applications (ICCCI'2011, Gdynia, Poland).
