The need for communication and information exchange led to the first attempts to connect computers over a network. Later the network of networks, the Internet, brought more attractive elements of communication: fonts, color, pictures, video, and audio. The first Web sites were related to big organizations - world-class enterprises and universities - and functioned something like an advertisement or a storefront. As time went on, people started to spend many hours on the Internet, giving rise to social uses such as entertainment, online conversations and acquaintances, and leisure activities. The Internet became an everyday companion, and the first social communication and collaboration tools and applications appeared.
