t's a fall evening in Portland, Ore., and Alex Wilson, president of the Brattleboro,Vt.-based Resilient Design Institute, is about to begin a lecture when the woman introducing him offers half-joking assurance to the audience. For the next hour, she says, they needn't worry about the massive earthquake predicted for this region, because the building has been seismically retrofitted. But the quake's looming possibility, whether it comes in five days or 50 years, is precisely why the auditorium is full for Wilson's talk.
