Increasing focus on environmental biotechnology in the face of pressing environmental challenges

It is not an overstatement to say that humanity faces some serious environmental challenges in the coming decades, such as curbing greenhouse gas emissions, finding renewable energy sources, managing waste and controlling pollution and disease. Environmental biotechnologists are in a position to do more than just rearrange deck chairs on the Titanic. As the Editors of this issue noted last year, a technology-driven knowledge explosion is creating opportunities to address some of our most pressing needs It is in this spirit that we solicited opinion pieces for this Environmental biotechnology issue of Current Opinion in Biotechnology.
