Abstract In this article the author describes the process and framework behind the experience of developing a “Legitimate Visual Question Exhibition.” We start with the assumption that a museum has a responsibility to challenge and provoke its visitors and help them create new meanings, thus transcending the traditional model of information transfer. A Legitimate Visual Question Exhibition can effectively accomplish this. It approaches the task through installations of familiar subjects and stories presented in a manner that provokes questions that aren’t easily answered by cause-and-effect explanations. Several examples from a cultural museum in Israel are used to illustrate the philosophy and approach.
