Experiments with downstream denitrification in a continuously-backwashed sand filter

When adding on a denitrification stage to an existing sew- age treatment plant, different methods must be studied from a process engineering and economical point of view to take account of the specific plant conditions. One possi- bility would be to use existing or planned wastewater filters for downstream denitrification. In large-scale tests with a continuously backwashed DYNA sand filter (A=40 m~2) the possibilities and limits of downstream denitrification with the addition of external carbon sources were studied.
