I was born in Leicester, England, in 1938. I'm the eldest of 10 children from a large Irish Catholic family. I left grammar school at the age of 15 and went into engineering with the British United Shoe Machinery Company. They were a subsidiary of the United Shoe Machinery Company of America. It was here that I made my first tentative steps in IP.rnWhat brought you to IP?rnThat was serendipity. I was an apprentice serving in the research department of British United. I was in the last year of my apprenticeship and I was asked if I wanted to work in the drawing office.
