Panama Canal responds to coronavirus impact

The Panama Canal has seen its tonnage increase by 4.4%, 258.4M Panama Canal tonnes (PC/UMS) in the first half (H1) of the 2020 fiscal year (FY2020) - and is 'closely' monitoring the global impact of Covid-19. The 258.4M PC/UMS was registered from October 2019 to March 2020, compared to 247.4M PC/UMS tonnes intermodal for H1 FY2020. Meanwhile the Panama Canal registered 7,528 transits during the same period, versus a projected 7,029 transits. In terms of total tonnage, the container segment continued to lead with 82.1M PC/UMS tonnes during HI FY2020, followed by bulk carriers at 41.8M PC/UMS tonnes and chemical tankers at 39.9M PC/UMS tonnes.
