A mere 30 years ago, when sales of electronic controllers first surpassed those of pneumatics, it was the beginning of a new era. Since that time, building-management system (BMS) technologies have made significant advances, as illustrated by benchmark events over those last three decades (see "BMS Timeline," page 20). For many, the culmination of those advances came recently. In 1987, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) began work on the concept of a standard for open-protocol systems for BMS. In 1995, the society paired with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to launch ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 135-1995, a data-communication protocol for building-automation and -control networks狟ACnet.
