During the technology boom, companies asked one question about computer and server infrastructure: How fast can we build it? Today, they ask different questions: How can we maintain this high-value, critical space at the lowest cost with the least risk, and how can we get the most out of the investment? In many ways, the change has been healthy. During the building boom, companies driven by speed to market often installed critical equipment without a long-term strategy. In many cases, deficient electric power and cooling support infrastructure put those facilities at significant risk of failure. The slowdown in the industry provides time for facility planners and managers to rethink their critical space requirements and align their building and operations plans with core business objectives. A sound operating and maintenance strategy follows a process built on the Four A's: Analyze, Act, Audit, Adapt. If you use that basic approach, your company will be positioned for the next business upturn with critical facilities that: 1. Operate reliably to meet customer expectations. 2. Need few emergency repairs. 3. Require less staff time to operate and maintain. 4. Minimize energy consumption. 5. Deliver long equipment life. 6. Provide the lowest cost of ownership.
