Rebar prices set to top £450 per tonne

Rebar fabricators are warning of a summer of record reinforcement prices thanks to spiralling demand and increased raw material costs. They claimed that average prices for rebar could top £450 per tonne by the end of June, because of increased demand for steel in the United States, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Steady high demand in China has also squeezed supplies and mills have been forced to raise prices in a bid to offset higher raw material prices. UK producers Alphasteel and Celsa both announced £15-per-tonne rises on bar products in February and have been tipped to slap on further price hikes during March and April.
