Engineering a structure to fit over a listed building can present problems enough -problems that require clever solutions. But add to that the enormity of the site and the need to work around the 19.2 million passengers that pass annually through Edinburgh Waverley station and you have a logistical nightmare. Planning to get the materials to the site alone has become an act akin to choreographing a ballet for Tom Lamb, managing director of Charles Henshaw & Sons. The company, which was founded in 1904 and employs a team of 120, specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of architectural metalwork and glazing systems. Most of its work involves the installation of glazed curtainwalls, and notable projects include work on Holyrood Park House and a £5m curtainwall for the Canary Riverside building in London.
