Public sector clients starting on sites too fast, warns Bam chief

Fear of losing projects is prompting public sector clients to rush contractors on to sites too quickly, according to Bam Construction managing director Richard Bailey. Mr Bailey, who sits on the board of Bam Construct UK, said contractors were not getting the early involvement they used to before the recession. Bam Construct last week posted pre-tax profit of £24.6 million in the 12 months to 31 December 2010 - down from £29.9m the previous year. The UK buildings arm of Dutch firm Royal Bam saw turnover drop from £l.l3bn to £1.04 billion. Mr Bailey said: "Public sector clients are worried about having their projects cut and feel that once they have started on site they are more secure. "We used to work with a client team for 12 to 18 months de-risking a project. We would market-test the design, find out the glitches and work on value engineering.
