In England and Wales, the importance of fire safety is laid down in the Building Regulations through the guidance of Approved Document B and by means of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRFSO) or equivalent legislation in other parts of the UK. This covers nearly every type of building, structure and open space within the built environment. Once a building is constructed or a significant alteration is made to an existing building, it is incumbent on the construction company involved to ensure that all relevant facts pertinent to the fire performance of the building are handed over to the owner (Responsible Person), who in turn must now take on a legal responsibility to comply with the appropriate Fire Safety Order.
